Aim: to provide high quality and comprehensive liver ultrasound skills for pediatric gastroenterologists (both theoretical and practical) for performing a standardized and effective bed-side examination for the paediatric patient.

At ESPGHAN meeting in Lille, France a pilot workshop of liver ultrasound will take place. The meeting will accommodate 1 group of 25 delegates. The group will be divided in to smaller groups depending on their experience. Each group will be able to gain hands-on training under the supervision of experts. 

Participants will be selected based on the time of registration, accessibility to an ultrasound machine (including a commitment letter) and national/center diversity.

ESPGHAN intestinal ultrasound (IUS) hands-on qualifying programme:

  • ESPGHAN HANDS-ON IUS STEP 2 
    • 25-06-2026: 08:30 – 12:30 (Healthy Volunteers)
    • 25-06-2026 13:30 – 15:30 (Patients)
  • ESPGHAN STEP 4 IUS
    • 25-06-2026 14:00 – 16:30
  • ESPGHAN HANDS-ON EXAM STEP 4 (WITH PATIENTS)
    • 26-06-2026 15:30 – 16:30
Aim: to provide high quality and comprehensive intestinal ultrasound skills for paediatric gastroenterologists for performing a standardized and effective bed-side examination for the paediatric patient.

ESPGHAN structured a 4 steps qualification program consisted of 4 steps:

Step 1:

Online theoretical introduction to IUS in the paediatric patient (3-4 hours). To be performed within 2-4 weeks prior to the hands-on event.

Step 2:

A hands-on event of two half days. The selected participants will participate in numerous hands-on sessions in small groups with real patients, led by ESPGHAN IUS experts.

Step 3:

Hands-on practice (at least 50 examinations) in an ESPGHAN approved qualifying center.

Step 4:

An advanced workshop including  lectures and case presentations of complicated IUS IBD patients.

This step will be available for participants who successfully complete steps 1-3.

Exam and certification

Each participant, who will successfully finish all 1-4 steps will be able to take a theoretical and practical exam during the Annual EPSGHAN Meeting.

A formal ESPGHAN certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the entire qualification and passing the practical and theoretical exam.

We offer a step 2 course (hands-on) to be performed during the ESPGHAN annual meeting in Lille and a theoretical step 1 (on-line) taking place up to 2-4 weeks prior to the annual meeting.

The annual meeting will accommodate one group of 30 delegates (divided into small groups of 5) with each having 3-hour online course 2-4 weeks prior to the meeting and a 6 hours practical hands-on experience during the meeting
